“The purpose of arts education is not to produce more artists, though that is a byproduct.
The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society.” – Dana Gionia
At Courtrai Primary we believe that taking part in cultural activities, is an integral part of every child’s development process. To support this, we offer a variety of cultural activities for our learners.
Choir
Courtrai Primary has both a junior and a senior choir where our learners can experience the joy of singing together.
Both choirs practice during school hours. We also have regular workshops.
Apart from singing at choir festivals and competitions, we annually take part in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod, where both choirs received excellent results over the years.
Music
Learners have the opportunity to receive tutoring in piano, recorder, guitar, ukulele, violin, keyboard, singing and music theory. All music learners have the opportunity to take part in internal concerts. Learners can also enter external exams (Unisa, Trinity or Royal Schools). We also encourage participation in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod.
Drumline
The drumline was started in 2022 and already promise to be a showpiece for the school. A group of 10 pupils form part of the startup group and are all developing their drummin skills. Practices take part once a week after school hours.
Orff Orchestra
The Orff Orchestra is another new activity at the school. Learners have the opportunity to experience the joy of playing in an ensemble. The orchestra practices once a week after school and already had their first performance at the school’s Nativity Play.
Orators
The school has a very active orators team. The year starts with an internal competition. One of the annual highlights is the ATKV competition.
Eisteddfod
Each year, between 50 and 100 learners fr0m our school take part in the annual Paarl Valley Eisteddfod. Here learners are given the opportunity showcase their artistic talents. Categories include choir singing, instrumental performances, individual singing, recitation and unprepared reading. A large number of learners also take part in dance categories, organised by private instructors.
